"I'm of the firm belief
that nice willing colts are made. I cannot emphasize enough the
importance of starting out with a genetically good raw product. We
are all a product of our genetic makeup and this determines
everything about us, as to how we react to pressure, how athletic we
are, how forgiving we are, how willing we are to accept things
thrown at us, how resistant we are to accepting things that are new
to us, ect. ect., so if you start out with a genetically sound horse
and you instill a good foundation into the colt you definitely stack
the odds in your favor to end up with a good willing horse from the
get go that can work comfortably in any discipline in the world that
it lives in. I believe that if you have good genetic and good
positive proven training methods along with a halfway decent
individual from the genetic pool that you choose, plus a good
instructional program you definitely increase your chances of
success. For me there are 6 things that every horse must
understand and demonstrate that it understands for me to consider
the horse properly started. We must establish ourselves as the
leader in the horse / human relationship plus gain the horses
respect and trust. It is crucial that the horse understand
yielding, flexion, and impulsion. I believe that the horse should
experience as much of the world he lives in adding pressure in
increments without putting pressure on him or sensory overload and
taking small victory's and building on them to accomplish bigger
successes. I try my best to end up with a colt that is relaxed, self
assured and willing to be led. I try to end up with a colt that is
always looking for answers, and looks to you for guidance. I try to
end up with a colt that understands what yielding the 4 corners and
rib is and has good lateral and vertical flexion. I like a colt that
works off the hind quarters and is very light in the bridle. I work
toward a colt that will go up anything, and down anything, thru
anything, over anything, and crosses and goes into water. The
foundation is the key to the future of success in every discipline.
Training is a process not an event, Training is always ongoing."
